Nielsen Ratings

What are Nielsen ratings? When my classmate was presenting, I had never heard about this topic. Nielsen Ratings is a measurement system used to gauge the size and demographics of television audiences. These ratings help networks and producers understand how many people are watching a particular show and who those viewers are. I learned that they can track not only how many people watch a show but also the types of people watching, including their age, gender, and geographic location. The Nielsen Ratings often show the Super Bowl as one of the most-watched events in the United States. For example, in 2023, over 113 million people tuned in, making it a ratings giant. Awards like the Oscars often analyze their Nielsen Ratings to see if their viewership is growing or declining, which can influence future changes in the broadcast format. I learned that Nielsen ratings have a major impact on the TV industry because when ratings are high, it can drive ad revenue and renew shows. However, low ratings might lead to a cancellation. Since cable TV is becoming outdated, it evolves challenges. It's evident that streaming services are taking over how we watch television, so tracking viewership has become a little more complicated, but Nielsen remains a cornerstone for understanding TV trends.

By shaping the entertainment scene, Nielsen Ratings has an impact on society. They have an impact on the kinds of content that is produced and shared by assessing TV and streaming audiences. Since popular content frequently reflects societal trends and interests, this is again quite similar to agenda setting. Learning about Nielsen's rating was very interesting but rubbed me the wrong way because this algorithm can determine our age and location.

Age of AI // Blog 5

Age of AI ( First Hour )

AI is something that has been brought to many people's attention nowadays. There are many things to say about AI positively and negatively. AI has recently become highly prevalent in our lives but dates all the way back to the 1950s. Standing for artificial intelligence, AI’s purpose is to replicate human intelligence. While it can be incredibly useful, it also raises concerns due to its ability to make decisions independently of human oversight and its potential to invade privacy.

This video dives deep into China’s AI revolution, drawing comparisons between data and oil as valuable resources. China is frequently referred to as the new Saudi Arabia of AI due to its vast data pool. The large amount of data is crucial since AI algorithms perform better with more data they have access to. The video highlights some significant events that highlight China's quick development, such as the 2016 matchup between Go world champion Lee Sedol and Google's AI, AlphaGo.

The video explains different views on AI and job loss, suggesting that around 50% of jobs could be at risk from AI in the next 15 years. Khai Fuli admits there’s a downside, explaining that while many AI projects don’t directly impact human jobs, some will definitely lead to people losing work. The idea is that AI is coming, whether we want it or not, and it’s going to change the job market. White-collar jobs, which rely heavily on numbers and analysis, are easier to replace with software, so roles like reporting, trading, telemarketing, customer service, and data analysis are especially at risk. On the other hand, blue-collar jobs that require physical skills, like hand-eye coordination, are safer for now since machines aren’t yet able to handle these tasks well.

I’m personally not a big fan of AI, and I haven’t used tools like ChatGPT mostly because of some of the things I’ve heard about it. I’ve only used them when teachers required them for research purposes. I can see the benefits of AI—it’s definitely helping advance the world around me. Beyond just tech, AI has led to major breakthroughs in fields like healthcare. It plays a huge role in innovations like self-driving cars and in discovering new treatments, which can be incredibly valuable for society. However, while these advancements make us more advanced, they also come with increased risks. By placing so much trust in this technology, we might be setting ourselves up for potential dangers in the future. There are many different kinds of AI, each handling unique tasks, but I believe it’s essential that everyone remains aware of both the pros and cons, and be cautious about what personal data they share with AI systems.

EOTO Technology presentations from classmate react. // Blog 7

EOTO Technology Presentations

My classmate's Facebook presentation was one technological advancement that caught my attention during the presentations. The fact that a young Mark Zuckerberg who was a sophomore founded Facebook while attending Harvard University intrigued me tremendously.  Facebook was first created by Mark as a tiny online application called Face Smash. Using the Harvard student information, Face Smash was used to compare images of girls who attended Harvard that Mark received. A lot of males on campus used Face Smash, which made it popular. To increase popularity, Mark gradually extended the program to other schools. This presentation caught my attention because I have seen the movie social networking so many times. When hearing about Facebook from my classmate it made me realize how accurate the movie really is.  Facebook has come a long way since its early days as a college-only social network. Today, it's one of the biggest platforms worldwide, connecting billions of people. While it remains popular for staying in touch with family and friends, it's also evolved to include features like a Marketplace for shopping and groups for connecting with people who share your interests.

"The Facebook," which eventually grew into the platform we know today. While Facebook is now popular mainly among our parents, it’s also branching into new products, like the Metaverse, which is gradually gaining traction. Over time, Mark has built the company into a social media giant by acquiring Instagram and other popular platforms. Overall I found this presentation particularly interesting because of Facebook's origin story.
