Nielsen Ratings
What are Nielsen ratings? When my classmate was presenting, I had never heard about this topic. Nielsen Ratings is a measurement system used to gauge the size and demographics of television audiences. These ratings help networks and producers understand how many people are watching a particular show and who those viewers are. I learned that they can track not only how many people watch a show but also the types of people watching, including their age, gender, and geographic location. The Nielsen Ratings often show the Super Bowl as one of the most-watched events in the United States. For example, in 2023, over 113 million people tuned in, making it a ratings giant. Awards like the Oscars often analyze their Nielsen Ratings to see if their viewership is growing or declining, which can influence future changes in the broadcast format. I learned that Nielsen ratings have a major impact on the TV industry because when ratings are high, it can drive ad revenue and renew shows. However, low ratings might lead to a cancellation. Since cable TV is becoming outdated, it evolves challenges. It's evident that streaming services are taking over how we watch television, so tracking viewership has become a little more complicated, but Nielsen remains a cornerstone for understanding TV trends.
By shaping the entertainment scene, Nielsen Ratings has an impact on society. They have an impact on the kinds of content that is produced and shared by assessing TV and streaming audiences. Since popular content frequently reflects societal trends and interests, this is again quite similar to agenda setting. Learning about Nielsen's rating was very interesting but rubbed me the wrong way because this algorithm can determine our age and location.
